April 22, 2008—FDA officials announced at least 81 deaths are linked to contaminated Heparin originating from China. Hundreds more may have experienced severe allergic reactions as a result of the dangerous drug.
Herparin, manufactured by Baxter Corporation, included ingredients from Changzhou Scientific Protein Laboratories. CSPL is a China company that was operating without a license and was completely unregulated, either by Chinese authorities or the FDA. Baxter International, which purchased ingredients from CPSL, confirmed that the contaminant could cause illness.
These warnings have intensified calls for greater regulation and oversight of imports from China in the wake of warnings and recalls of poisonous toothpaste, lead-painted toys, toxic pet food and contaminated medicine. |
