U.S. Marshals Seize Tainted Blood Thinner in Ohio

Federal authorities said Thursday they have seized some of an Ohio company's supplies of contaminated blood thinner containing material from China.

U.S. marshals, acting at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, seized 11 lots of heparin from Celsus Laboratories Inc. of Cincinnati, the agency said in a news release.

In emotional testimony before a congressional subcommittee Tuesday, relatives of people who died after being injected with contaminated heparin expressed anger and sadness at the failure of the manufacturer and government regulators to ensure the drugs were safe.

"I watched my husband and my best friend slip away before my eyes," Colleen Hubley of Toledo, Ohio, told the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. "My husband was a fighter until the bitter end ... I know that he would want me to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else."

A contaminated blood thinner from China has been found in drug supplies in 11 countries, and federal officials said Monday they had discovered a clear link between the contaminant and severe reactions now associated with 81 deaths in the United States.

U.S. health officials said Wednesday they have found a contaminant in a blood-thinning drug produced by Baxter Healthcare Corp. that has been linked to more than a dozen deaths in the United States.

In early February, the Food and Drug Administration launched an investigation and then a recall of some forms of the product.
